The Cyprus Youth Symphony Orchestra was established in 1987 as “Cyprus State Youth Orchestra”, simultaneously with the Cyprus State Orchestra (today Cyprus Symphony Orchestra), by decision of the Council of Ministers. Its aim is to provide students of all levels of education and young musicians the possibility to gain group work experience and develop their knowledge and skills. Furthermore, the CyYSO Academy was established to offer musical training on orchestral instruments given by experienced musicians.
In October 2006, the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra Foundation was created by decision of the Council of Ministers to undertake the operation of both orchestras. By doing so, the Foundation set itself the objective of further developing and promoting the activities of both orchestras.
With over 80 members of ages 9 to 26 years old, selected through auditions, the Cyprus Youth Symphony Orchestra, is the most important youth music ensemble of the country. As a full member of the European Federation of National Youth Orchestras (EFNYO), it functions according to the highest artistic standards, promoting music, training young musicians for professional careers and building future audiences.
