A co-production of the Lefkosia Youth Ballet and the Cyprus Youth Symphony Orchestra
celebrating the 20-year anniversary of Lefkosia Youth Ballet.
Lefkosia Youth Ballet celebrates this year 20 years of activity. Within the framework of the celebration of this anniversary, the Lefkosia Youth Ballet presents, in collaboration with the Cyprus Youth Symphony Orchestra, the classic ballet Coppélia. A production performed entirely by the young talents of Cyprus.
A few words about the ballet:
Coppélia, the greatest comic ballet and a tender story of love, belongs to the circle of the very few and distinctive 19th century ballets that have survived until nowadays, enjoying an uninterrupted existence. It was first choreographed by Arthur Saint-Léon to music by Léo Delibes and a libretto by Charles Nuitter. The libretto and the ballet scenes are based on two stories by E.T.A. Hoffmann: “Der Sandmann” (“The Sandman”) and “Die Puppe” (“The Doll”). Coppélia was premiered on the 25th May 1870 at the Theater Impérial l’Opéra, Paris, with the 16-year-old ballerina Giuseppina Bozzacchi in the lead role of Swanhilde. The ballet’s performances were temporarily interrupted by the Franco-Prussian War and the Siege of Paris. However, Coppélia remains the most performed ballet in the history of Paris Opéra Company. Modern-day productions of the ballet are traditionally derived from the revivals staged by Marius Petipa for the Imperial Ballet of Saint Petersburg in the late 19th century. Petipa’s choreography was recorded using the Stepanov notation system. These written symbols were used later for the production of the ballet by other eminent ballet companies such as Vic-Wells Ballet (precursor to London’s Royal Ballet).
Synopsis:
The story is about a girl named Coppélia, who every day is seen to sit strangely silent on a balcony. A boy named Franz is deeply infatuated with Coppélia and wants to marry her, despite the fact that he is already betrothed to another. His fiancée, Swanhilda, sees Franz sending Coppélia kisses. Swanhilda soon finds out that Coppélia is in reality a doll who belongs to doctor Coppelius, a crazy scientist who gave life to her. Swanhilda decides to pretend to be the doll and “comes to life”, in order to win the love of Franz. Chaos ensues, but soon all is forgiven. Swanhilda and Franz get married and the wedding is celebrated with various festive dances.
