The concert is part of the Solon Michaelides Year Celebration
An iconic figure of art music in Cyprus, Solon Michaelides forged a compositional style infused with Byzantine melodic elements as well as Greek and Cypriot folk rhythms, and informed aesthetically and technically by his exposure to the French and British interwar musical scenes. Often, he imparts a very specific, ethereal quality to the music through a transparent orchestration, shifting tertiary harmonies and an uncomplicated texture.
Byzantine Offering is exemplary of this ethereal and austere atmosphere, as the composer envisioned its creation after a visit to the Panayia Aggeloktisti Church. In La Flûte, the impressionistic element is almost an imperative, as is in the Prelude for Violin and Piano. In contrast, works such as the String quartet, the Greek suite for cello and piano, and the Trio for violin, cello, and piano draw on the Cypriot folk idiom to paint their musical canvas.
