Mendelssohn’s “Hebrides” overture was inspired by an 1829 excursion to the famous Fingal’s Cave an awe-inspiring sea-cave on the Scottish island of Staffa. The composer was wrestling with the piece for three years before he was satisfied with it. Looking back on the creation of his Second violin concerto, Prokofiev wrote: “The number of places in which I wrote the concerto shows the kind of nomadic concert tour life I led then. The main theme of the first movement was written in Paris, the first theme of the second movement at Voronezh, the orchestration was finished in Baku and the premiere given in Madrid.” And as a tribute to where the concerto was premiered, Prokofiev added a special touch to the third movement…At the age of 15, Mendelssohn wrote his First Symphony, which was first heard at a private party in celebration of his sister Fanny’s 19th birthday in 1824. Its first public performance was given three years later, with the Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra under its then-Kapellmeister Johann Philipp Christian Schulz.
