As university professor Estelle Ruth Jorgensen notes in her book “The Art of Teaching Music”, “…Playing chamber music requires special skills, both musical and social, that differ from the skills required for playing solo or symphonic works.” Furthermore, and almost 200 years earlier, Goethe had described chamber music (string quartet music to be precise) as “four rational people conversing”. None can argue then that the five musicians of this series of concerts share a special bond, both musical and social, even though some may have differing opinions as to how rational each and every one of the others is! Still, no-one can cast doubt over two of the greatest masters of chamber music represented in this series of concerts, with Debussy’s intellectual impressionism so different from but yet on a par with Brahms’ rampant romanticism…
