Some of the finest 20th century classical music of the Americas is brought to you in this programme. Villa-Lobos’s hauntingly beautiful Bachiana Brazileira no. 5 (1938) combines sensuous dance rhythms with the influence of Brazilian song. Copland’s hugely popular sets of Old American songs (1950, 1952) are a celebratory tribute to America’s highly diverse song heritage, including minstrel songs, ballads and hymns. Famous for his revolutionary “new tango”, Piazzolla wrote numerous “classical” compositions which “all relate to Buenos Aires”, as the composer explained. Ηis Sinfonietta was singled out by Buenos Aires music critics as the best work of 1953. A more sombre vision of the tango is conveyed in his extensive Tangazo (1970), subtitled “variations on Buenos Aires”.
