Holding one of the UK’s top violin jobs, that of LSO leader, for 14 years from the age of 26, presented John Georgiadis with the ideal springboard for launching into a conducting career and in the mid 70’s, starting with education work with the Liverpool Phil, he took his first steps as conductor. Feeling the need to acquire a sound technique and good understanding of conducting requirements to stand alongside his already substantial orchestral experience, he decided on the arduous course of eight years of conducting studies with Sergiu Celibidache. He has since conducted concerts and recordings worldwide with many of the top orchestras. Although comfortable with most symphonic repertoire, having performed a wide range of music, he is an ardent Bruckner fan. A wide ranging and varied career has included several Music Director positions, starting with the London Virtuosi Chamber Orchestra which was founded in 1972, the Bristol Sinfonia in the 1980’s, and from 1994 to 1996, the Bangkok Symphony Orchestra. He has also enjoyed arrangement and orchestration, including the music of Thai composers while in Bangkok with the BSO, and has frequently performed these works. He has also arranged a large number of Viennese pieces for orchestra and/or chamber ensemble, works both popular and rare, including an adaption of Bruckner’s String Quintet for String Orchestra.
