Spiros Pisinos held the position of chief conductor and artistic director of the Cyprus Symphony Orchestra from 2005 to 2008. He has conducted London’s Philharmonia Orchestra, the Mariinsky Young Philharmonic Orchestra, the Sinfonia Finlandia, the Athens and Thessaloniki State Orchestras, the West Australia Symphony, the Nuremberg Symphony and the Orchestre National de Montpellier. On his initiative and under his direction, Spiros Pisinos founded the Ensemble Philharmonia composed by professional Greek Cypriot, Turkish Cypriot and other European accomplished musicians. The Ensemble Philharmonia has successfully performed both in Cyprus and Paris, and has reaffirmed the determination of Spiros Pisinos to promote the creative collaboration of leading musicians residing all over the island.
Spiros Pisinos worked as cover conductor at the New York Philharmonic and Orchestre National de France both under Kurt Masur. In the operatic realm, he conducted Rigoletto at Dusseldorf’s Deutsche Oper am Rhein, Don Giovanni at Cottbus Theatre, Germany and Così Fan Tutte in a multinational co-production with Germany’s Bremen Opera, Cyprus’ Rialto Theater, and the Israel Camerata Orchestra. In 1999, he was asked by Maestro Antonio Pappano to undertake orchestra, choir and soloist rehearsals for Lohengrin, at the Teatro Carlo Felice, in Genoa, Italy. He continued actively to assist Maestro Pappano with that theater’s subsequent productions of Wozzeck and Don Giovanni with the Israel Philharmonic. In 1996, he worked as coach and conductor at the Nationaltheater Mannheim in a particularly wide repertoire. As pianist he has performed chamber music with ensembles including the Jerusalem String Quartet and the Vienna String Soloists.
Spiros Pisinos began piano studies in 1970 at the Morphou branch of the Ethnikon Odeon with Eleni Pourgouridou and subsequently with Loulou Symeonidou in Lefkosia. In 1978, Spiros Pisinos successfully earned his diploma in piano performance and was granted the conservatory’s Medal of Outstanding Achievement. A recipient of the Leventis Foundation scholarship, Spiros Pisinos completed his studies in orchestral conducting at the Vienna Conservatory where he graduated in 1996. In 1982, prior to devoting himself exclusively to music, Spiros Pisinos had studied Biophysics at the University of Pennsylvania and had subsequently carried out research at M.I.T.
