Spirituality, the human psyche and the world of dreams are often the subjects of composers during the romantic period and the early 20th century. Barber creates a mood “full of pathos and cathartic passion”, as Alexander J. Morin describes the composer’s extremely popular Adagio, whilst Schoenberg transfers us to the intense world of expressionism. Representative of the romantic spirit are Saint-Saen’s stylistically adventurous 2nd piano concertο – which we will enjoy by Cypriot pianist Manolis Neophytou – and Mendelssohn’s music on Shakespeare’s comedy A Midsummer night’s dream.
