Mozart was the first to combine the clarinet, the viola and the piano in a trio resulting in a work which flows with inspiration and beauty of melody and form. The special timbres of the clarinet and the viola give the music an especially intimate and gentle character. Bruch’s magnificent composition for the same instrument combination is in essence a set of character pieces abounding with strong emotions: gloom, rhapsodic exaltation, restlessness and agitation, ardour and introverted lyricism.
