Russian composer Alexander Borodin’s superb gifts for colour, beguiling romantic melodies and sparkling rhythms are abundant in his 2nd string quartet which he dedicated to his wife on their 25th anniversary. Beethoven’s string quartet no. 1 was actually the second string quartet that he composed. Showing total mastery of the classical string quartet tradition bequeathed by Haydn and Mozart, it is the most impressive in terms of size and expressive range within the set of Beethoven’s six string quartets, op. 18.
