The creative encounter between Mikis Theodorakis and poet Yiannis Ritsos in Epitaphium has yielded an emotionally powerful work, springing from the depths of the Greek soul. The lament of the mother for the unjust death of her precious son, becomes a universal symbol of every mother’s sorrow, and of Virgin Mary’s for the sacrifice of Christ on the cross. Next to this cultural landmark, Faure’s Requiem functions as the catharsis and consolation: it perfectly expresses the composer’s view of death “as a happy deliverance, an aspiration towards happiness above, rather than as a painful experience”.
