Handel’s oratorio Messiah well-deserves its place among the greatest and most popular masterpieces in Western choral literature. The libretto, compiled by Charles Jennens, consists of verses from the Bible and is divided into three parts, which address specific events in the life of Christ. Part one will be presented which is primarily concerned with the Advent and Christmas stories. Handel’s setting abounds witharias and choruses of unsurpassed inventiveness and inspiration, which range from the solemnly prophetic to irrepressible joy.
