Mikis Theodorakis’s musico-theatrical work “Song of the dead Brother” is a song of praise to human dignity and the universal need for remembrance. At the same time, it is a brave call for national unity and unanimity, after the suffering of a civil war of brothers against brothers. The presentation of the work a few days before the Anniversary of the Independence of the Republic of Cyprus (1st Oct.) has a special symbolic significance and reminds us strongly of the need for rapprochement between the people of the same country who have been divided by war. The work speaks of the Mother (a symbol of the homeland), whose two sons were in opposite camps and were eventually killed in the war. The work ends with the choral song “Unite rock next to rock, Unite hand in hand”.
